What is solar photovoltaic power generation

Solar power generation and photovoltaic power generation are one of the two most popular power generation methods in modern society. Many people may confuse them and believe that they are the same. In fact, they are two power generation methods with different characteristics. Today, I will tell you the difference between them.

First: Definition

Solar power generation refers to the process of using solar energy to convert solar radiation energy into electrical energy, which is output into alternating current through devices such as inverters. The technologies used include thermal energy utilization and light energy utilization. Solar power generation is one of the most mature renewable energy sources, and it does not emit any pollutants and is environmentally friendly.

Photovoltaic power generation refers to the process of directly converting solar radiation energy into electrical energy by utilizing changes in the charge properties of solar energy. In order to convert this light into electricity, photovoltaic panels need to be placed in the photovoltaic power generation system. Photovoltaic panels are made of semiconductor materials that can directly convert solar energy into electricity, such as silicon, gallium, arsenic, etc.

Second: Device

Solar power generation is usually achieved by installing collectors, inverters, and other equipment on the ground or roof, and converting the collected energy into electrical energy for output to the power grid system. These collectors are generally made of specially treated reflective materials, which can convert the radiant energy of the sun into thermal energy, which is then converted into electrical energy through thermal mechanical operation.

Photovoltaic power generation usually needs to be placed on the roof or ground of houses, garages, factories, and other places. The photovoltaic power generation system also requires equipment such as inverters to convert the collected energy into electrical energy and output it to the power grid.

Third: Efficiency

Regarding efficiency, photovoltaic power generation has several advantages. Firstly, photovoltaic panels are easy to install, occupy a small area, and can be produced on a large scale and used in large photovoltaic facilities. Secondly, the conversion efficiency of photovoltaic panels is becoming increasingly high, and many companies are improving existing technologies to improve conversion efficiency.

The cost of solar power generation is lower than that of photovoltaic power generation because this technology does not require much maintenance and the cost of its collectors is lower. However, the efficiency of solar power generation is not as high as that of photovoltaic power generation, and this technology requires a larger space for equipment placement.

Fourth: Scope of Application

Both solar and photovoltaic power generation have very flexible usage methods. According to research, photovoltaic power generation is most suitable for use in areas with good shading conditions, and is not suitable for installation in shaded areas. Solar power generation is more suitable for use in relatively open areas, as it does not require too much shadow or obstruction.

Finally, we can see that both solar and photovoltaic power generation are currently one of the environmentally friendly power generation methods, with their own advantages and disadvantages. Regardless of the type of power generation method, we should work harder to use them and make our own contribution to our environment.
